Focusing on what we can control – How to set Intentions

“Focusing on what we can control first - our internal states - so that we can show up each day ready to tackle the unknown with more confidence”

Let’s get intentional. If the pandemic taught us one thing - it is that we have to stay flexible, while focusing on what really matters.

intentional.

I started setting one-word intentions a few years ago. Throughout the year this one-work intention will act as a guide. A north star. A reminder of what truly matters.

The changing world is still going to challenge us mentally and emotionally and it is more important than ever to turn inwards.

One way to prepare for the unknown is by focusing on what you can control and how you choose to show up and live your life moment to moment. This word is a compass of how you want to show up. This word can apply to a lot of situations in your life or in a certain area that you pick.

For example, if you have been very busy in the past year, maybe your word is Family, or Connection or Listen. I’ve picked different words over the years like Change, Awareness or Focus. Whatever you pick needs to fit your specific needs. It’s not about picking a BIG word. Some people need to pick a word like Rest, Self-Love or Relaxation.

Taking the time to set an intentional word and getting clear on WHO you want to be and HOW you want to show up each day is going to help you gain the internal self-mastery so you can begin to live a more intentional, conscious and emotionally balanced life.

how to pick your
intentional word

reflect

The first step is always awareness, because awareness bring clarity. Ask yourself what you want more of and what you want to let go of. What lessons do you want to bring into your next chapter?
What do you want to let go of?

choose your word

This will be your North Star. Don’t get distracted by too many words that sound good. That’s why step 1 is so important. Focus on what YOU need most of. Who do you want to be as Employee, Student, Spouse, Parent, Entrepreneur, etc… and focus on HOW you want to show up in that role. What type of PERSON do you want to be?  A more conscious parent/spouse/friend?

actions as reminders

This is very individual. If you like journaling – reflect on it and remind yourself about it. Or have it as post-it note reminder on your fridge, laptop, … And keep a mental checklist i.e. if your word is “Focus”, it can be helpful to visualize how you will bring focus to a conversation with your team.

What I like about this one-word intention is that it sets a positive and motivational tone for everything that you do. It’s a reminder, your north star and certainly a journey. It’s about constant growth.

Focusing on what we can control first - our internal states - so that we can show up each day ready to tackle the unknown with more confidence, intention, and awareness is the first step towards peace of mind. One way to start this, is getting clear on your personal intentions for the year.
